Bunscoil McAuley Rice was established in 2007 as a result of the amalgamation of the two local primary schools in Callan , Co. Kilkenny.
The school is situated on two separate sites in Callan. The Junior school is situated on the Kilkenny Road opposite St. Brigid's College. This building was built by the Mercy order and opened in 1970. It is a wonderful bright building with over 5 acres of beautiful green playing fields. The building is surrounded by extremely well maintained grounds. We have received sanction for a new 16 classroom school on this site.
The Senior school is situated on West Street in the centre of this historic charter town. The original school sign from the first Christian Brothers' School in 1868 is located at the school gate. There is a vegetable garden to the rear of this site where the children learn to grow their own crops. This school building has been described by visitors as 'an oasis of learning'.
Both school sites offer students a warm, welcoming learning environment.
Our Founders
The original girls' primary school in Callan was known as Scoil Mhuire. It was opened in 1970. The Mercy Order opened their first primary school in Callan as far back as 1871. The Sisters of Mercy were known as 'ministering angels' because of the great work that they did visiting the poor.
The original boys' primary school was known as Scoil Iognáid Rís. It was opened in 1965. However , the Christian Brothers established their first school in Callan on West Street in 1868. The original school sign is still located at the school gates today.
Prayers of our Founders
Edmund Rice Prayer
O God, we thank You for the life of Edmund Rice
He opened his heart to Christ
present in those oppressed by poverty and injustice
May we follow his example of faith and generosity.
Grant us the courage and compassion of Edmund as we seek to
live lives of love and service.
We ask this through Christ our Lord,
Amen.
Prayer of Catherine McAuley
My God I am yours
For time and eternity
Teach me to cast myself entirely
Into the arms of
Your loving providence
With the most lively, unlimited
Confidence in your
Compassionate, tender pity.
Grant me,
O most merciful redeemer
That whatever you ordain or permit
May be acceptable to me.
Take from my heart
All painful anxiety;
Suffer nothing to sadden me but sin,
Nothing to delight me
But the hope of coming
To the possession of you
My God and my all,
In your everlasting kingdom.
Amen.
